Why We Built Bumped Around 60-Second Video Chats
Random video chat used to have a simple promise: click a button, meet someone new. The idea was great. The experience often wasn’t. Chats were anonymous, there was no way to know who was on the other side, and every conversation felt like it had no beginning and no end.
We wanted to keep the good part, the surprise of meeting someone you’d never meet otherwise, and rebuild the rest.
One minute changes everything
A short first round takes the pressure off both people. You only have to say hi and ask one question. If the conversation is good, you both tap Stay, the timer disappears, and you keep talking for as long as you like. If not, the round ends on its own. Nobody has to make an awkward exit.
Real people, verified adults
Before their first chat, everyone on Bumped passes a quick face age check (18+). It takes about a minute, and Bumped never receives or stores the selfie, only the result. It’s the single biggest reason people feel comfortable here.
Made for practicing languages
We noticed many people use random chat to practice a language. So we built for it: choose the language you want to chat in, join a practice club with a weekly live hour, use conversation starters, tap 🔊 to hear any message, and switch languages halfway with a language exchange.
Friends, not just matches
If you click with someone, both tap Add friend. Then you can message, call and meet again. And if a conversation made your day, you can send a small gift to say thanks, but nobody is ever expected to.
